Vandalism at the county’s recreational facilities appears to be a growing problem or at least one that is exasperating some officials.
District 5 Commissioner Stephen Walker raised the issue briefly toward the end of the Jefferson County Commission meeting on Thursday evening, Jan. 7.
Walker, whose District 5 encompasses the Wacissa River Park, has in the past posted photos on his Facebook page of the defacement of parts of the park with graffiti.
Walker didn’t reference any particular incident in his latest comments but rather generally said that the problem of vandalism needed to be addressed and action taken against violators.
He said security cameras were being installed at the Wacissa Park and possibly other locations in the coming days to capture any criminal mischief so that violators could be prosecuted.
With the consensus of the board, Walker instructed the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to have warning signs designed that could be posted at all the county’s recreational facilities warning would-be vandals that the county would prosecute.
He said he wanted the word to get out that the authorities would no longer tolerate the destruction of county property.
Sheriff Mac McNeill agreed to have the signs designed for posting at the appropriate locations and have his deputies be on the lookout for violators.
