For those Monticello residents who have a talent for the game of cornhole, you're in luck, as the Monticello Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting its first ever Cornhole Tournament Fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Jefferson County Recreation Park, located at 1380 Mamie Scott Dr. in Monticello.
The tournament begins at 1 p.m. that Saturday, but for those who wish to register on the day of the event, it is recommended that you come to sign up about an hour before the event begins. Pre-registration is also available, and for anyone wishing to pre-register, you may do so at anytime before the day of the event. For any questions, or to pre-register, please call Chief Austin Malloy at (850) 210-2224. There is a $30 entry fee to participate in the cornhole tournament, and all fees are due the day of the event, even if you pre-register.
This fundraiser offers a 50/50 payout, which means that all entry fees that are collected will be combined into one lump sum, half of which will go to the winner of the tournament, while the other half will go to benefit the Volunteer Fire Department's Equipment and Training fund. Chief Malloy stated that the VFD had been long brainstorming a fundraiser idea that the department could use to benefit their training and equipment fund, and a cornhole tournament was an idea that they kept coming back to.
“It's been a sort of round-robin idea for some time now. We have seen other departments and organizations try similar events and they have had success.” He said in an interview Monday. If the event is successful, it will be the first of many annual cornhole events that will serve to benefit the department.
To participate in the tournament, each person must belong to a team of two people. If you would like to enter into the competition with a team member of your choosing, you may register as a team. Any single entries may be paired up with other single entries on the day of the event. There will be food and drink available at the event, so bring your friends, bring your family, and most importantly, bring your best cornhole skills!
