Local farmers, ranchers and supports of agriculture might have missed the annual cool-season forage demonstration and tour hosted by the Jefferson County UF/IFAS Extension Office in March. The tour and demonstration have been an annual tradition within the county for the last several years.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 concerns, the local extension office was unable to host a local tour this year.
In order to allow local farmers and agriculturalists a chance to still participate in this tradition, the UF/IFAS Extension service is offering a cool-season tour still - but this time, it is virtual.
Demonstrated by Dr. Ann Blout, a UF/IFAS Forage Breeder, the extension service is offering a free Twilight Cool-Season Forage Tour through a video that has been posted on YouTube.
The 12-minute video was filmed at the North Florida Research and Education Center (NFREC), which is located near Marianna, Fla.
During the virtual tour, the audience will explore several cool-season annual forage plots to see the recommended varieties and improved cultivars that Dr. Blount and her team have developed for grazing, silage and hay production in the Southern Coastal Plains.
Dr. Blount will introduce viewers to black oats, and show the results of her efforts to develop earlier maturing rye, triticale, oat and ryegrass cultivars that are less day-length sensitive and will produce earlier in the winter to reduce dependence on hay and bale feeding.
The video was posted to the Panhandle Ag Extension’s YouTube channel and is offered at no charge for any viewer.
