Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 251 recently announced the local winners of the VFW Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition for 2022-23. Congratulations to Del Vontae Walker for writing the first place essay and to Jamie Moore for writing the second place essay addressing the “Why is a veteran important?” theme. The first place award of $100 and second place award of $75 were presented on Tuesday, May 16, at Jefferson County K-12. The essays were judged on treatment of the theme with imagination and human interest; clear expression of ideas in an organized, fully developed, smoothly flowing way; and vocal presentation in a clear and credible manner.
The annual Voice of Democracy competition is open to students in grades nine through 12. Essays are written and then recorded in the student's own voice. Local winners have the opportunity to advance to state and national levels of competition. For more information, visit vfw.org.
