If you came to Jefferson County in the 1830s, you would find it to be a very different place than it is today. During the territorial period, the county seat of Monticello had been inhabited by settlers for only a few years and was a mere clustering of a few stores, homes and a post office. In the further reaches of the county, sparse communities began popping up to serve nearby citizens' needs near mills, plantations, waterways, roads, railways and more.
