The North Florida Wildlife Center (NFWC) in Lamont, Fla., is looking for volunteers from Jefferson County to assist its staff with animal care, visitor interaction and groundskeeping.
Executive Director Ryan Reines says, “As a nonprofit organization, the NFWC relies on the help of dozens of volunteers to help achieve the highest standards of animal care, public education, operations, and environmental service.”
Volunteers interested in animal care might assist with cleaning enclosures, preparing fresh food, assisting with feedings, changing out drinking water and checking water quality for tank animals, says Animal Care Specialist Lyssa Hansel.
Opportunities to interact with visitors can primarily involve giving tours but, for seasoned volunteers, might also extend to manning tables at festivals, assisting with outreach programs and helping to promote fundraising events.
Groundskeeping tasks for volunteers could range from weeding to watering plants to scrubbing the pelican pool. There are even light construction projects that volunteers who like to use drills, saws and hammers can help out with.
Applicants for volunteer positions must be 18+ years old, able to commit to 8 hours/week, work outdoors year round, work in a team environment, speak with visitors and learn quickly.
High school age students also can inquire about engagement opportunities related to their studies.
If you or someone you know is looking to spend time making a difference in the world, working closely with wildlife and gaining invaluable experience – consider volunteering with the NFWC.
