A new area code, 448, has been added to Florida for telephone calls. Moving forward, as a result of this new addition, callers in the 850 and 448 areas will be required to dial the area code with every call. This change will go into affect on Saturday, May 22. After that date, any callers neglecting to add the area code to the call will hear an automatic recording instructing them to try their call again.
The new 448 area code will cover the same area as the 850 area code. This is being done to ensure a supply of phone numbers, doubling the phone numbers available within the 850 region.
In addition to the previously listed changes, callers with phone numbers linked to life safety devices will need to update their devices to dial the area code as well. These devices may include: medical monitoring devices, PBXs, fax machines, interne dial-up numbers, alarm systems, security systems, gates, speed dialers, mobile contacts list, call forwarding settings and voicemail services. Also, be sure to check your website, business stationary, advertising materials, personal and business checks, contact information and pet ID tags.
